Where
to Begin?
One
popular route is to begin at the famous Ernest M. Morial Convention
Center and to head downriver towards the World Trade Center.
If you proceed to the riverfront, you can board the ferry
for a free ride to Algiers Point and the Jazz Walk of Fame.
The buildings of the Algiers Point area offer a good sampling
of the architecture unique to New Orleans.
After
viewing the East side of the Mississippi, it's all aboard
the ferry again for a short trip back to the Canal Street
landing. The ferry ride offers a great opportunity for photographs
and a picture-perfect view of the New Orleans skyline.
Back
on dry land, you can continue downriver and enter the famed
New Orleans Riverwalk. This route offers a close-up view of
the river's famous steamships and includes a leisurely ride
through Woldenberg Riverfront Park.
Continuing
up past the Riverboat Docks, you may wind your way up the
ramp to Artillery Park that includes a cannon formerly used
in the Civil War. Once atop the hill, you can experience the
most recognizeable view of Jackson Square and the historic
St. Louis Cathedral.
Proceeding
down to street level, you can wind around Jackson Square where
you will find a host of musicians, mystics, artists, jugglers
and horse-drawn carriages. Circling the statue of Andrew Jackson,
you will pass right outside the doors of the St. Louis Cathedral,
the Cabildo and the Presbytére.
Heading
back upriver, your route can take you past the World Trade
Center and into the lovely Spanish Plaza with its large fountain
and tile mosaics. After some river mist and and perhaps a
snack or beverage from one of the plaza vendors, you can explore
further or take a break for the day -- it' up to you!
